Jacek TARCZYLO - Ann MIADZIELEC, POL © Roland

To state here that Jacek Tarczylo and Anna Miadzielec, POL, are the most accomplished Acrobatic Rock 'n' Roll couple of all times can be substantiated. With four World Champion titles, they may still be one short of the record five accrued by their perennial opponents Ivan Youdin - Olga Sbitneva, RUS. But with the World Games 2017 and the World DanceSport Games 2013 gold medals they are one up on everybody else.

And their career continues ...

Next title within their reach is that of IWGA "Athlete of the Year 2017." But to get that, they will need your help.
Online voting has been opened yesterday! Support your favourite by voting once per day through 15 January! (We had erroneously set the deadline at 31 January yesterday.)

This is a dash and a matter of discipline as well as creativity: VOTE EVERY DAY! Make your vote(s) for Jacek and Anna count by resorting to whatever enhancement you can think of (social media promotion, VPN). As of right now, they're down by some 400 votes already!

Put them into first! Do it right here!

The Cuban ExperienceProducer Barbara Ambroz says about her documentary on the Cuban footprint in competitive Latin American dancing, "I see it as my purpose to acknowledge the musical and dance heritage of Cuba, to learn from the underlying philosophies and to apply the discoveries to competitive Latin American dance styles.

"It is not so much about comparing the authentic and competitive style, but more about acknowledgement of the specifics and uniqueness of both. However, competitive style could be enriched by conscious implementations of authentic values to  various areas of dance expression."

A book on the topic will be published soon! Watch "Back To The Roots" right here!

B-Boy Moy @ Little ShaoMoises "Moy" Rivas and Anniina "AT" Tikka are the two Athlete Role Models appointed by the IOC. The organisers of the Buenos Aires 2018 YOG have recently talked to Moy about life, the hip hop culture and the Youth Olympic Games.

On the sporting side of things, Moy sees breaking very close to gymnastics. "Every gymnast I’ve seen performing a floor routine has attempted to dance," he says.

“Breaking is such a physically demanding dance! People forget the athleticism it requires. But once it gets displayed on a platform like the Youth Olympic Games, I think people are going to start to realise, like 'wow,' this is very, very close to a floor routine in the Olympics but with more musicality and rhythmic approach.”

We had caught up with B-Boy Moy during the 2017 GrandSlam in Hong Kong. Here is an interview we did with him then.

Olympic Channel: B-Boy AuricoThe Olympic Channel releases another video on breaking. This time the producers follow Lautaro Bravo, aka B-Boy Aurico, as he takes a dance lesson in the Argentine Tango. Aurico is one of four breakers who will represent Argentina in the 2018 World Youth Breaking Championship in Kawasaki, near Tokyo, JPN.

With the newly learned Tango steps, Aurico plans to enhance his toprock and produce innovative breaking routines with the typically Argentine flavour added. Only dance - combined with an open mind - can make such a fusion possible. Watch out for the "Che" b-boys and b-girls with their secret weapon!

Finnish Open Changes

Helsinki, FIN - 19 March © EgliThe 2018 GrandSlam Series gets underway with the first leg held in Helsinki, FIN, on Saturday 3 (Standard) and Sunday 4 (Latin) March. The two top-tier competitions will again be embedded into the Finnish Open, which takes place from 2 to 4 March. Business as usual, you could say. But there are a few important changes this year: the Finnish Open is relocated to a new venue, the Vantaa Energia Areena, and the Airport Hilton turns into the official hotel for the period.

Aside from the GrandSlam, the Finnish Open will host other international competitions for all age groups: a WDSF Open Ten Dance, Rising Stars (LAT/STD) and different Opens for Seniors II, III and IV scheduled on Friday 2 March. International competition for Professionals, Youth, Senior I, Junior and Juveniles are schedule on 3 and 4 March, concurrently with the GrandSlam

Only WDSF Adjudicators will serve at the competitions and each panel will consist of maximum one judge per country.

Glamorous evening galas complement the programme on Saturday and Sunday, with live music courtesy of Eurovision Song Contest winner Dave Benton and his "Best Band."

Saturday Night Downtown HanoiThat results for "dancesport" in a Google search under "News" are frequently dominated by posts in Vietnamese has much to do with the fact that "DanceSport" is generally kept in English, proper WDSF branding included. Something which can produce a headline such as this:

Môn DanceSport tỏa sáng với số vé bán nhanh nhất (DanceSport Shines with Fastest-Selling Tickets)

That is how the Vietnamese Olympic Committee (VOC) titled its report on DanceSport tickets selling better than those to any other of the 20 sports featured in the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Art Games (AIMAG) in Ashgabat, TUR. In the same article, the VOC celebrated the AIMAG gold medal obtained in Salsa by Vietnames athletes Nguyễn Trung Kiên and Phạm Hồng Anh as well.

DanceSport's public profile seems to be exceptionally high in Vietnam for other reasons too. There is more dancing in public and on TV than in most countries. It seems virtually omnipresent. Just like in China, one comes across groups dancing in the streets and in parks at all hours of the day and night. Only one or two or three other sports are practised as publicly by people of all ages: Vietnamese foot shuttlecock and -maybe - football. Simply Popular!

Gabriele Goffredo - Anna Matus, MDA © EgliGabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus do what Franco Formica - Oksana Nikiforova, GER, and Aniello Langella - Khrystyna Moshenska, ITA, the only other couples winng three World Championships, did before them: they quit at three World Champion Latin titles as what was formerly known as amateurs and turn professional.

In a statement on her Facebook page, Anna announced their decision yesterday with the following words:

Well ... Here we are ... The moment has arrived for us to open a new chapter in our careers, no longer as amateurs but as professionals. We spent many years fighting to reach the top and then two more wonderful years fighting to stay there, and we now look forward to our new challenges in the Professional Division, because we feel we were born to fight.

These have been the best years of our lives, not just in the three that we finally reached our goals, but the time getting there too. Victory would never have tasted so sweet without all the times we were defeated on the way ... Thanks to all of you who have been with us and against us up until now. You have challenged us and inspired us to become what we are today.

Their move to the Professional Division, which was announced by Anna through her Facebook page on Monday 15 January,  triggered hundreds of comments and reactions by fans of the Moldovans across all social media.

Gabriele and Anna have developed into real "global players" when it comes to their popularity. Their names appear in online articles around the world. Let's have look back at 2017:

Breaking To Keep Gold in Japan

JDSF Press ConferenceSome of the biggest names in breaking wore formal attire once more at today's press conference in Tokyo, JPN. B-Boys Katsu One and Taisuke joined Japan DanceSport Federation President Toshitsugu Saito, Managing Director Atsushi Yamada and others to present two things to the journalists in attendance.

JDSF being the host and organiser of the event, it first informed about the 2018 WDSF World Youth Breaking Championship held in Kawasaki, near Tokyo, on Sunday 20 May.

As the third and final stage in the qualifying process for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), it will identify from among close to 100 those 24 b-boys and b-girls, 12 per gender, who will get to compete in the YOG Breaking events in October.

Then the JDSF leadership presented "Team Japan," the five members of the Nippon squad who have qualified for the 2018 World Youth Breaking. Among them the winners of the Continental Qualifier for Asia and Oceania, which took place in early December of 2017 in Taipei City, TPE:Shigeki Hanai, aka B-Boy Shigekix and Kawai Kimo, aka B-Girl Ram.

These two breakers pledged that they - together with three team mates - would try hard to keep the gold in Japan in May ... and to bring back even more from Argentnia in October. Then all five got down to prove that the talent as well as the skills are there to make good on the pledge.

YOG Picto for Breaking © JacobowskiThe Organising Committee for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games rolled out the official pictogramme used to identify 34 sports and disciplines featuring with competitions. They bring a truly innovative spin to a concept which came of age with the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich.

"Draw B-Girl Brenda Romero in a headspin - but don't lift the pencil off the paper!" were the instructions given to 500 children at different schools in Buenos Aires.

The outcome is superimposed on the photograph of B-Boy Roxrite.

Tommy Shaughnessy © RolandAt its meeting held one year ago in Barcelona, ESP, the WDSF Presidium voted unanimously to install Thomas "Tommy" Shaughnessy to the newly-created employment position of Sports Director. In order to fill his new role, Tommy committed to take on an enormous workload from one day to the next and to convert the living room of his house in Dublin, IRL, into the global hub for all sports matters of WDSF.

When Tommy had to undergo emergency treatment following a breakdown during the German Open Championships in Stuttgart, there were many who brought this in the context of stress brought about by his new professional assignment. Even though he recovered rapidly and was back on the job only two weeks later, Tommy eventually decided to reduce the levels of stress by presenting his resignation to members of the Presidium on 12 January 2018.

Today's Presidium meeting in Bucharest, ROU, acknowledged the significant contributions made by Tommy over the past year by rising for a standing ovation. WDSF President Lukas Hinder will contact  him to convey the sincerest thanks on behalf of WDSF and its executive.

WDSF President Hinder - WDSF Presidium Member NakamuraIn an effort to constructively and amicably put an end to the disagreement between the International Cheer Union (ICU) and the World DanceSport Federation as well as the International Federation of Cheerleading (WDSF/IFC) regarding Cheer and CheerDance, the WDSF Presidium voted unanimously to approve the wording of an initial agreement to settle existing differences.

During their meeting held on 20 and 21 January in Bucharest, ROU, the 16 members of the WDSF Presidium adopted a text which the Legal Commission had authored to outline the procedure to arrive at a Coexistence Agreement between ICU and WDSF/IFC. WDSF President Lukas Hinder and WDSF Presidium Member/IFC President Nakamura affixed their signatures to the document which will now be forwarded to the other parties, the ICU and the Global Association of International Sports Federations.

It was not too long ago that the "Goldstadtpokal" in Pforzheim, GER, was considered to be the unofficial season opener, the first competition in the annual calendar bringing together many of the top-ranked couples for the first match-up of a new year.

Well, many of the top ten couples have already seen some action elsewhere: be it in Spain or in Italy. But for the "Goldpokal" World Open Latin the LIVE results show very clearly that the participation is stellar.

Here's the visual history of the "Trophy,"  whose design changes at regular intervals - but always being entrusted to local artists - and which gives the "Golden City Trophy" its name.

2017 World STD Formation @ Roland"Tyumen" is the resounding name of a city in Siberia and - if "Vera" is added - of a highly successful Latin or Standard formation team. Since 2017, the name also refers to a quality live stream courtesy of Tyumen Time. It covers the Tyumen Open!

Last year's webcasts set very high standards for the live transmission of extensive coverage on the two Tyumen Opens. We are confident that this year will be no different. And we're looking out for Aleksey Litvinov. The "man" in Tyumen!

Marius-Andreu Balan - Khrystyna MoshenskaSeven couples out of the top twelve in the WDSF World Ranking Latin danced the World Open at the Goldstadt Pokal in Pforzheim, GER, one of the  most traditional events on the WDSF calendar. Local darlings Marius-Andrei Balan and Khrystyna Moshenska, GER, continued where they had left off at the 2017 GrandSlam Final in Shanghai, CHN. In first!

The #1 in the WDSF World Ranking for Standard, Dmitry Zharkov - Olga Kulikova, RUS, were invited to dance a show in Pforzheim. They garnered as much applause as they did one week earlier, when they danced in the Tuscany Open in Montecatini, ITA.

We publish all of this just to emphasise once more that all organisers are invited to provide us with streams and other coverage on their WDSF events. As an example: over the past two days we streamed eight hours from the Tyumen Open in Russia. Even though half of it was blocked due to copyright issues (which we could help the organisers to avoid in the future), the stream was much appreciated by thousands of visitors to our site.

In short: you provide us coverage in form of quality content, we put it up. We don't always have the time to search the media to find it ourselves. For Pforzheim we knew where to look: our thanks go to the Pforzheimer Zeitung!
