2017 World Cup 10D @ MelnikovaMoscow plays host to several WDSF sanctioned competitions over this weekend. The Professional Division holds its Super GrandPrix Finals at one of the Crowne Plaza hotels in the city centre. Yesterday's Latin Final was, as the say, a "classy" affair.

The other events - among them a World Cup Ten Dance - take place in setting which every dancer knows: the legendary Crocus Expo on Moscow's ring road. Marina Melnikova has sent us the first batch of photographs. We add them to the Gallery and to Facebook.

It Is About The Youth

B-Boy Renegade | BfG Judge @ Little Shao

The third of the Continental Qualifiers is history, the contingent of dancers representing countries in Asia and Oceania at the 2018 World Youth Breaking in Kawasaki, JPN, has been announced - and all results will be published today!

Maybe the most appropriate summary of this event was made by one of the senior members of the judging panel. By someone who's seen and done it all during a breaking career that doubles the age of the b-boys and b-girls competing in Taiepi City, TPE.

This is what Kev James, aka B-Boy Renegade, posted on his Facebook page.

Damn! Third and final Continental Qualifier for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games done and dusted. Back in 1982/3, when I got into this, there was no way I could have imagined this happening, much less being part of the process. The judging system is up and running. Working superbly.

This was by far the most interesting one for me. Meeting kids from Nepal, Mongolia, Bhutan, Myanmar...

I mean, who even knew these places had scenes? A few have only ever seen breaking online. They have never left their country, much less been to a jam and connected with so many like-minded individuals. Imagine being the first person in your family to leave your country. For dancing!
On top of that they get to meet a few of our shining stars: Storm, Mounir, AT, Bootuz, Narumi, Skim, Katsu, Kid Colombia, Vero, Lussy Sky ...

They are a mixture of innocence, nerves and excitement. It is, and always has been about the youth.

CHN Breaking

CHN BreakingWhile here in Shanghai for the upcoming 2017 GrandSlam Finals, we had the opportunity to talk to Jimmy Su, the Secretary General of the Chinese DanceSport Federation, about the YOG Qualifier held last weekend in Taipei City, TPE.

We wrote ahead of the event that bringing the five b-boys and B-Girl Lil-V in representation of the People's Republic of China to Taipei would not be easy. As all Cross-Straits sports exchanges, it called for special visas to be issued on both sides.

This then implied that an extra effort had to be put in by Jimmy Su, as the head of the Chinese delegation, and by Royce Yeh, as the President of the Chinese Taipei DanceSport Federation and formal host of the Qualifier. The Chinese as well as Chinese Taipei Olympic Committees and WDSF First Vice-President Shawn Tay were also involved in writing breaking history with the first ever breaking exchange.

The Chinese breakers and the officials lost one flight due to the delays in the visa issuance, but they ended up making it in time for the Qualifier. Of the six who battled last Saturday, four - three b-boys and B-Girl Lil-V, remain in the running for one of the 24 places in the YOG contingent

HKG BreakingWe talked about the ten breakers who travelled from Hong Kong to Taipei City with the ambitious goal to make it past the second hurdle on their personal #YOGjourney.

Well, two of them did - and that should make their coach Cha Cha Kong a very happy man! B-Girl Ivy and B-Girl B-Duck finished the Qualifier in 16th and 18th postion, respectively, and managed keep the Olympic dream of the Hong Kong breakers alive at least until 20 May 2018.

"So proud of these girls and my new students," Chacha Kong wrote on his Facebook page. "They made it to the World Youth Breaking Championship in Tokyo next year in May. But this has just begun! Thank you so much for believing in me and for listening to me!"

B-Boy Tricky Tricks @ Little ShaoThe WDSF General Manager, Guillaume Felli, sent out letters to each of the 12 National Member Bodies (NMBs) which succeeded - at the Qualifier in Taipei City, TPE, on 2 December - to keep b-boys and b-girls in contention for one of the 24 places in DanceSport's contingent for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

30 breakers representing 13 countries in Asia and Oceania advance to the third and final stage of the Olympic qualification process: the WDSF World Youth Breaking Championship on 20 May 2018 in Kawasaki, near Tokyo, JPN.

"It is extremely important that you get in touch with your National Olympic Committee (NOC) to discuss the qualification and provide the NOC with positive background information about DanceSport as well as the discipline of breaking in your country," Felli wrote in the letters.  "That will help to guide your NOC towards a favourable decision when it comes to validating participation in the YOG," he concluded.

Letters wents out to the following NMBs (in the order of the number of athletes qualified and the alphabet):

Japan (2 b-girls and 3 b-boys)
South Korea (2 b-girls and 3 b-boys)
Chinese Taipei (2 b-girls and 3 b-boys)
China (1 b-girl and 3 b-boys)
Australia (2-boys)
Hong Kong (2 b-girls)
Philippines (2 b-boys)
Kyrgyzstan (1 b-girl)
Malaysia (1 b-boy)
Thailand (1 b-boy)
Vietnam (1 b-boy)

Only one single country which qualified an athlete (B-Boy Tricky Tricks) does not have a NMB (yet): Nepal!

60th Anniversary Russian DanceSportThe 60th Anniversary of DanceSport is widely celebrated this year in the Russian Federation. The All Russian Federation of DanceSport and Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll in cooperation with the Red Square Company, the Russian top Chanel One television content provider, organized and held a festive Gala Evening at the State Kremlin Palace to commemorate the jubilee of DanceSport in Russia.

About 500 guests gathered on December 12 in Moscow to recollect the history of DanceSport, to pay tribute to those legendary dancers who were the pioneers of DanceSport in Russia and who made a considerable contribution to DanceSport development.

All generations of DanceSport community were present at the Gala Evening including Ceslovas and Jurate Norvaisa - the symbol of the legendary generation of DanceSport founders. Russian National Team members, former World and European champions, Russian top teachers and adjudicators attended the 60th Anniversary of DanceSport.

The event was supported by the Russian top sports officials who came to congratulate the Russian DanceSport with the jubilee: Chairperson of the Sport and Youth Committee of the Russian State Duma Mikhail Degtyarev, Deputy Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation Sergey Kosilov, Head of the Department for Sport and Tourism of Moscow Nikolay Gulyaev, Minister of Physical Culture and Sport of Krasnodar region Lyudmila Chernova, Minister of Youth and Sport of Tatarstan Republic Vladimir Leonov.

Dancing was definitely in the spotlight. Russian top DanceSport couples and breakers performed their exquisite shows to an ovation of the grateful public.

Russian DanceSport has come a long way for the past 60 years. Nowadays Russian athletes win medals and show excellent results at international competitions, performing the best quality dancing. A lot has been done to develop DanceSport into a modern kind of sport in Russia.

The All Russian Federation of DanceSport and Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll – the Russian governing body for DanceSport – pursues the policy aimed at further DanceSport development. Membership in the Russian Olympic Committee recently granted to FDSARR is a new step towards the successful evolution of DanceSport in Russia.

Season's GreetingsLukas Hinder, the President of the World DanceSport Federation, sends his Season's Greetings and wishes you the best of luck on your #YOGJourney to Buenos Aires. Let's broaden the horizons and let's reach for the Sky in 2018!

Dear Friends in DanceSport!

It is that time of the year when all of us tend to look in both directions – back at the past and ahead into the future – to take stock of where we are, where we are going and what we are doing in order to get there. It is a time of reflection and renewal.

Prior to the message you are reading, I have circulated another one to the members of the Presidium as well as the standing Commissions and the Committees, comparing the challenges WDSF will face in 2018 with those of mountaineers. Anyone belonging to this group of driven sportsmen should be able to confirm that the most perilous stage in an ascension is the one just prior to making summit. With the physical strength diminished by efforts of getting to the current height, the continued upward journey can easily appear more cumbersome – and the environment more adverse – than what is called for.

WDSF comes off another highly successful year, with our sport reaching new heights through its sixth participation in The World Games in Wroclaw, POL, as well as in many other major events held in close to 100 countries. Some managed to bring diversity to the dance floors, others focused on one or two single disciplines. Between all of them, they managed to define our brand in its full breadth.

No “event” was more encompassing and global than the first stage in the qualifying for the Breaking events at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games (BAYOG). With a system WDSF had developed specifically to go beyond the customary limitations of the organized and federated DanceSport, we succeeded in motivating more than 1,000 b-boys and b-girls from 81 different countries to enter into an IOC-sanctioned qualification process which made an uplifting statement. Dance as sport is easily capable to transgress the boundaries of a conventional contest. It can give more athletes the opportunity to express themselves in ways which are unique, even among those falling under the label “artistic.”

At the end of 2017, WDSF has reduced the number of breakers continuing in contention for one of the 24 BAYOG berths to less than 100. Between them, they represent 33 different National Olympic Committees. And there is only one dancer from one single country where WDSF does not (yet) have a Member Body: B-Boy Tricky Tricks from Nepal.

WDSF is on the right track – no doubt about that – but to make summit in the Himalayas, or anywhere else for that matter, it will need to be even more accommodating in some of the views it holds. If a dancer with Olympic aspirations is found between 80 and 8,000 metres (the range of elevation in Nepal) anywhere in the world, WDSF must be there too! The limits can only be the sky.

This is the message I would like to convey to you. Let’s renew the commitment to broaden our horizons and let's reach for the sky!

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2018!

Lukas Hinder
WDSF President
